A 53-year-old8k8, Indian-origin South African disbarred attorney has been arrested for scamming 17 couples across the country for booking the same venue. A private security company tracked her down.

But promises by her attorney and family to repay all the scam victims have led to her possibly escaping serving jail time for fraud.

Although she was initially not named due to her failure to appear in court, the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) identified her on Facebook as Prelin Mohanlal.

Her lawyer Chris Gounden contacted RUSA to arrange repayment for those with proof of payment. Mohanlal allegedly persuaded couples to pay large sums of money for a venue she had no connection to. She was arrested on Tuesday.

All the couples discovered the fraudulent activities when they arrived at the wedding venue and found nothing there.

One of the couples, who preferred to remain anonymous, contracted RUSA in December last year to track down Mohanlall. The company subsequently found through social media a total of 17 couples who had been scammed in this way.

Head of RUSA, Prem Balram, said, "Complainants were from several provinces in South Africa. A detective from SAPS Boksburg North (in Gauteng province) then contacted RUSA and informed them that the same suspect was wanted for two cases of fraud opened in Gauteng in 2024. The woman had defrauded a car dealership of R200 000 and a couple for R26 000."

After being tracked down by RUSA, Mohanlal told officers she was a disbarred criminal attorney who had stolen from a client's Trust Fund account. "It was later established that the suspect was convicted for fraud and has a criminal record and a history of scams spanning over 20 years," Balram said.

The weekly Post reported that Mohanlal denied running a scam, claiming her business faced difficulties and she struggled to repay those who cancelled their weddings. She claimed she owed nine couples about R60,000 and planned to repay every cent.

In a letter written to the PHF, the FIH has set April 25 as the deadline for Pakistan to decide on which body should govern the sport in the country and represent them at international level.

The team returns to camp after suffering a 0-5 loss in a five-match Test series in Australia.

“It's not a scam and I am not a scammer. My company went through so much. Late last year, I had nine cancellations and I sent out letters to each of the couples to notify them that they would get a full refund. But I could not repay them timeously because my partners pulled out in October8k8,” she told the weekly.
