Trump stated that he would use economic pressure, not military force, to integrate Canada into the United States.
“I will be using economic force because Canada and the United States, that would really be something,” Trump said, emphasizing his belief that removing the “artificially drawn line” between the two nations could benefit both countries in terms of national security. “Don’t forget, we basically protect Canada,” he added.
Trump’s comments marked the latest in a series of provocations aimed at Canada. He has repeatedly argued that Canada’s economic relationship with the US is imbalanced and that the US should not bear the financial burden of protecting its northern neighbor. He also criticized Canada’s trade practices, particularly its exports of cars, lumber, and dairy products to the US.
